This Guy's In Love

Ever since I saw the movie "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" a few days ago, this song has been haunting me. I remember it from my childhood. It's not that it's such a great song, or that it's a brilliant song, but it's a song that kind of hangs around and stays with you. Kind of sweet, kind of sad, a mix of things. "My hands.... are shaking"

"This Guy's in Love with You" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,

You say this guy
This guy's in love with you
Yes I'm in love
Who looks at you the way I do
When you smile I can tell
We know each other very well
How can I show you
I'm glad I got to know you, 'cause

I've heard some talk
They say you think I'm fine
Yes I'm in love
And what I do to make you mine
Tell me now, is it so
Don't let me be the last to know
My hands are shaking
Don't let my heart be breaking, 'cause

I need your love
I want your love
Say you're in love,
in love with this guy
If not I'll just... die

Tell me now, is it so
Don't let me be the last to know
My hands are shaking
Don't let my heart be breaking, 'cause

I need your love
I want your love
Say you're in love,
in love with this guy
If not I'll just... die

Love, Actually

The ending - people greeting one another in love - beams me on.

I Will Love You

“I will love you as a thief loves a gallery and as a crow loves a murder, as a cloud loves bats and as a range loves braes. I will love you as misfortune loves orphans, as fire loves innocence and as justice loves to sit and watch while everything goes wrong. I will love you as a battlefield loves young men and as peppermints love your allergies, and I will love you as the banana peel loves the shoe of a man who was just struck by a shingle falling off a house. I will love you as a volunteer fire department loves rushing into burning buildings and as burning buildings love to chase them back out, and as a parachute loves to leave a blimp and as a blimp operator loves to chase after it.

I will love you as a dagger loves a certain person’s back, and as a certain person loves to wear dagger proof tunics, and as a dagger proof tunic loves to go to a certain dry cleaning facility, and how a certain employee of a dry cleaning facility loves to stay up late with a pair of binoculars, watching a dagger factory for hours in the hopes of catching a burglar, and as a burglar loves sneaking up behind people with binoculars, suddenly realizing that she has left her dagger at home. I will love you as a drawer loves a secret compartment, and as a secret compartment loves a secret, and as a secret loves to make a person gasp, and as a gasping person loves a glass of brandy to calm their nerves, and as a glass of brandy loves to shatter on the floor, and as the noise of glass shattering loves to make someone else gasp, and as someone else gasping loves a nearby desk to lean against, even if leaning against it presses a lever that loves to open a drawer and reveal a secret compartment. I will love you until all such compartments are discovered and opened, and until all the secrets have gone gasping into the world. I will love you until all the codes and hearts have been broken and until every anagram and egg has been unscrambled.

I will love you until every fire is extinguished and until every home is rebuilt from the handsomest and most susceptible of woods, and until every criminal is handcuffed by the laziest of policemen. I will love until M. hates snakes and J. hates grammar, and I will love you until C. realizes S. is not worthy of his love and N. realizes he is not worthy of the V. I will love you until the bird hates a nest and the worm hates an apple, and until the apple hates a tree and the tree hates a nest, and until a bird hates a tree and an apple hates a nest, although honestly I cannot imagine that last occurrence no matter how hard I try.

I will love you as we grow older, which has just happened, and has happened again, and happened several days ago, continuously, and then several years before that, and will continue to happen as the spinning hands of every clock and the flipping pages of every calendar mark the passage of time, except for the clocks that people have forgotten to wind and the calendars that people have forgotten to place in a highly visible area.

I will love you as we find ourselves farther and farther from one another, where we once we were so close that we could slip the curved straw, and the long, slender spoon, between our lips and fingers respectively.

I will love you until the chances of us running into one another slip from slim to zero, and until your face is fogged by distant memory, and your memory faced by distant fog, and your fog memorized by a distant face, and your distance distanced by the memorized memory of a foggy fog.

I will love you no matter where you go and who you see, no matter where you avoid and who you don’t see, and no matter who sees you avoiding where you go. I will love you no matter what happens to you, and no matter how I discover what happens to you, and no matter what happens to me as I discover this, and no matter how I am discovered after what happens to me as I am discovering this.” ~ Lemony Snickett

Give Me Love

"Give Me Love" by George Harrison

Give me love
Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me free from birth
Give me hope
Help me cope, with this heavy load
Trying to, touch and reach you with,
Heart and soul

Om m m m m m m m m m m m m m
M m m my lord . . .

Please take hold of my hand, that
I might understand you

Won't you please
Oh won't you

Give me love
Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me free from birth
Give me hope
Help me cope, with this heavy load
Trying to, touch and reach you with,
Heart and soul

Om m m m m m m m m m m m m m
M m m my lord . . .

Please take hold of my hand, that
I might understand you

Almost forgot - this IS plan B

This collection was intended to remind me of things that make me feel better. I almost forgot.

"Eu não tenho medo do amor. Eu tenho medo é de amar quem tem medo dele. Amar quem teme o amor é como se apaixonar por uma sucessão de desistências." - Marla de Queiroz

(Rough translation: I do not fear love. I am afraid of loving someone that does. Loving whoever is afraid of love is like falling for a succession of distancings.*)

Thanks Roseangela.

*Desistências is difficult to capture-> something like distancings, desistings/resistings, cancellations, side-steppings, withdrawals, waivers, avoidances, ignorings.

Deep and Dark Like the Water Was

The Fog, by Kate Bush

You see, I'm all grown up now

He said
"Just put your feet down, child
'Cause you're all grown up now"

Just like a photograph
I pick you up
Just like a station on the radio
I pick you up
Just like a face in the crowd
I pick you up
Just like a feeling that you're sending out
I pick it up

But I can't let you go
If I let you go
You slip into the fog

This love was big enough for the both of us
This love of yours was big enough to be frightened of
It's deep and dark, like the water was
The day I learned to swim

He said
"Just put your feet down, child"

Just put your feet down, child
The water is only waist high
I'll let go of you gently
Then you can swim to me

Is this love big enough to watch over me?
Big enough to let go of me
Without hurting me
Like the day I learned to swim

'Cause you're all grown up now

Just put your feet down, child
The water is only waist high
I'll let go of you gently
Then you can swim to me

Love is the answer and you know that for sure

John Lennon - Mind Games

We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the Mantra peace on earth
We all been playing those mind games forever
Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil
Doing the mind guerrilla
Some call it magic the search for the grail

Love is the answer and you know that for sure
Love is a flower you got to let it grow

So keep on playing those mind games together
Faith in the future out of the now
You just can't beat on those mind guerrillas
Absolute elsewhere in the stones of your mind
Yeah we're playing those mind games together
Projecting our images in space and in time

Yes is the answer and you know that for sure
Yes is surrender you got to let it go

So keep on playing those mind games together
Doing the ritual dance in the sun
Millions of mind guerrillas
Putting their soul power to the karmic wheel
Keep on playing those mind games together
Raising the spirit of peace and love
(I want you to make love, not war
I know you've heard it before)

Nine Million Bicycles in Beijing

Nine Million Bicycles by Katie Melua

Thanks to Craig for introducing me to the song, and to Roland for posting it on Facebook today!

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That's a fact
It's a thing we can't deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die

We are twelve billion light years from the edge
That's a guess
No-one can ever say it's true
But I know that I will always be with you

I'm warmed by the fire of your love everyday
So don't call me a liar
Just believe everything that I say

There are 6 billion people in the world
More or less
And it makes me feel quite small
But you're the one I love the most of all

We're high on a wire
With the world in our sight
And I'll never tire
Of the love that you give me every night

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That's a fact
It's a thing we can't deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die

And there are nine million bicycles in Beijing
And you know that I will love you till I die

The Word - LOVE

"The Word" by the Beatles (Rubber Soul)

Say the WORD - and you'll be free
Say the WORD - and be like me
Say the WORD - I'm thinking of
Have you heard? - the word is LOVE
It's so fine
It's sunshine
It's the WORD - LOVE

In the beginning I misunderstood
But now I've got it, the word is good

Spread the WORD - and you'll be free
Spread the WORD - and be like be
Spread the WORD - I'm thinking of
Have you heard? - the word is LOVE
It's so fine
It's sunshine
It's the WORD - LOVE

Everywhere I go I hear it said
In the good and bad books that I have read

Give the WORD - a chance to say
That the WORD - is just the way
It's the WORD - I'm thinking of
And the ONLY word is LOVE
It's so fine
It's sunshine
It's the WORD - LOVE

Now that I know what I feel must be right
I'm here to show everybody the light

Say the WORD - and you'll be free
Say the WORD - and be like me
Say the WORD - I'm thinking of
Have you heard? - the word is LOVE
It's so fine
It's sunshine
It's the WORD - LOVE

Anaïs Nin

Anaïs Nin - 1903–1977

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."

"I only believe in fire. Life. Fire. Being myself on fire I set others on fire. Never death. Fire and life. Les Jeux."

"I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman."

"It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it."

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage."

"We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations."

"I looked with chameleon eyes upon the changing face of the world, looked with anonymous vision upon my uncompleted self."

"It takes courage to push yourself to places you have never been before... to test yout limits... to break through barriers. And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."

"No life, no history, no human being, no event is without meaning. But it takes a certain training to penetrate the surface and we mistake superficiality for realism."

"The body is an instrument which only gives off music when it is used as a body. Always an orchestra, and just as music traverses walls, so sensuality traverses the body and reaches up to ecstasy."

"Action without meaning becomes animal. The dream without action is equally destructive."

"Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living."

"Permit yourself to flow and overflow. Allow for the rise in temperature and all the expansions and intensifications. Something is always born of excess."

"Something is always born of excess: great art was born of great terror, great loneliness, great inhibitions, instabilities, and it always balances them."

"The important task of literature is to free man, not to censor him, and that is why Puritanism was the most destructive and evil force which ever oppressed people and their literature: it created hypocrisy, perversion, fears, sterility."

"The important thing is to set the passions free."

"The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery. I have no fear of clarity."

"I prefer by far the warmth and softness to mere brilliancy and coldness. Some people remind me of sharp dazzling diamonds. Valuable but lifeless and loveless. Others, of the simplest field flowers, with hearts full of dew and with all the tints of celestial beauty reflected in their modest petals."

"Three or four threads may be agitated, like telegraph wires, at the same time, and if I were to tap them all I would reveal such a mixture of innocence and duplicity, generosity and calculation, fear and courage, I cannot tell the whole truth simply because I would have to write four journals at once."

"Every difficult situation into which you are sometimes thrown has some kind of opening somewhere, even if it is only by way of the dream."

"I cannot live without seeing him. It is a hunger, an unbearable hunger. I rushed to him today. It is like touching fire. He makes me terribly happy."

"...she lived now with all herself, this body so long ignored. She burned at last completely and living was revealed to her in a thousand ways. She melted into the world, into dreams, into flesh, into moist desires. Before she gave only the cold radiation of her thought-now she gave her burning flesh. She was woman."

"And to walk into chaos with a passion for crystallization does not imply to dispel the chaos. It means to discover more and more chaos, to descend further, to discover one cave underneath another, to become aware of the impossibility to seize."

"The truly faithless one is the one who makes love to only a fraction of you. And denies the rest."

"Stories do not end."

"To think of him in the middle of the day lifts me out of ordinary living."

"I am like a winged creature who is too rarely allowed to use its wings. Ecstasies do not occur often enough."

"For indeed my life is a perpetual question mark -- my thirst for books, my observations of people, all tend to satisfy a great, overwhelming desire to know, to understand, to find an answer to a million questions. And gradually the answers are revealed, many things are explained, and above all, many things are given names and described, and my restlessness is subdued. Then I become an exclamatory person, clapping my hands to the immense surprises the world holds for me, and falling from one ecstasy into another. I have the habit of peeping and prying and listening and seeking -- passionate curiosity and expectation. But I have also the habit of being surprised, the habit of being filled with wonder and satisfaction each time I stumble on some wondrous thing. The first habit could make me a philosopher or a cynic or perhaps a humorist. But the other habit destroys all the delicate foundations, and I find each day that I am still... only a Woman!"

"All those who try to unveil the mysteries always have tragic lives. At the end they are always punished."

"Coming near him like a ballet dancer she took a leap towards him, and he, frightened by her vehemence, and fearing that she would crash against him, instinctively became absolutely rigid, and she felt herself embracing a statue."

"For you and for me the highest moment, the keenest joy, is not when our minds dominate but when we lose our minds, and you and I both lose it in the same way, through love."

"Only the united beat of sex and heart together can create ecstasy."

"The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself."

"In the infinite there is no impasse."

"Do not seek the because - in love there is no because, no reason, no explanation, no solutions."

Love Measures

"Then do we still need our soul mate? Oh, yes, I say, because this is the bed through which the river of our life flows from another transcendental reality, this is the infinite on which the horizon of our heart rests in other dreams or transcendental realities." ~ Sorin Cerin

"In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities." ~ Janos Arnay

into your being, the more joy
you can contain." ~ Kahlil Gibran

"How can I keep my soul in me, so that it doesn't touch your soul?
How can I raise it high enough, past you, to other things?
I would like to shelter it, among remote lost objects,
in some dark and silent place that doesn't resonate
when our depths resound." ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Love is an infinite sky! ~ Osho

STRAWBERRIES

There were never strawberries
like the ones we had
that sultry afternoon
sitting on the step
of the open French window
facing each other
your knees held in mine
the blue plates in our laps
the strawberries glistening
in the hot sunlight
we dipped them in sugar
looking at each other
not hurrying the feast
for one to come
the empty plates
laid on the stone together
with the two forks crossed
and I bent towards you
sweet in that air
in my arms
abandoned like a child
from your eager mouth
the taste of strawberries
in my memory
lean back again
let me love you
let the sun beat
on our forgetfulness
one hour of all
the heat intense

and summer lightning
on the Kilpatrick hills

let the storm wash the plates

~ Edwin Morgan

Part Five: The Single Hound

LOVE reckons by itself alone,

To one who never felt it blaze,
Itself is all the like it has.

And Sometimes, Just a Good Cry

"Winter" by Tori Amos

Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose
Get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove
I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice
"Your must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I can't always be around"
He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and I'm here still waiting Withering where some snowman was
Mirror mirror where's the crystal palace
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams
On the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself

He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear

Some things you do for money and some you do for love love love

"Love Love Love" - The Mountain Goats

King Saul fell on his sword
when it all went wrong
and Joseph's brother sold him down the river for a song
and Sonny Liston rubbed some tiger balm into his glove

Some things you do for money
and some you do for Love Love Love

Raskalnikov felt sick
and he couldn't say why
when he saw his face reflected
in his victim's twinkling eye

Some things you'll do for money
some you'll do for fun
but the things you do for love are gonna come back
one by one

Love love is gonna lead you be the hand
into a white and soundless place

Now we see things
as in a mirror dimly
then we shall see each other
face
to face

And way out in Seattle,
young Kurt Cobain
snuck out to the greenhouse
and put a bullet in his brain

Snakes in the grass beneath our feet
rain in the clouds above
some moments last forever
but some flair out
with love love love

Love with all my heart the wretches gone awry

The Wretches Gone Awry by Happy Rhodes

Mine are like the wings of a butterfly
A dusty pair so,
Don't you touch them or I'll never fly anywhere

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

Ever see the wings of a dragonfly?
Paper-thin and cellophane
And quickly broken like the will to live for a mind in pain

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

I cannot change what is and
I cannot make it die
But I can love with all my heart
The wretches gone awry

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

You know I can be rid of my time and
the moon will always shine
'Cause he knows I need him to walk
this vile and crooked line

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

And you can own all the light in the world and still be blind
And lie and hide away from the people in
the world and still be kind

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

I cannot change what is and
I cannot make it die
But I can love with all my heart
The wretches gone awry

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

All I ask is you let me be to live like I do
I'll never be part but someday I will pass on through

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

You can pull the wings from a dragonfly
And you can kill the flight of a butterfly
But you can't harm me for I live with the freedom to decide

And the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

You cannot change what is and
You cannot make it die
But you can love with all your heart
The wretches gone awry

Say
You cannot change what is and
You cannot make it die
But you can love with all your heart
The wretches gone awry

Yes the wretches have gone awry I saw them walk on by

Dream of Love as Time Runs Through My Hand

"Desert Rose" by Sting

[Cheb Mami Introduction (Algerian Arabic):]
Hadaee mada tawila
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
[English:]
Oh night oh night
It has been a long time
And I am looking for myself and my loved one
And I am looking for myself and my loved one
And I am looking for myself and my loved one

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

[Cheb Mami (Algerian Arabic):]
Aman aman aman
Omry feek antia
Ma ghair antia
Ma ghair antia
[English:]
Aman aman aman
My life is for you
And no one other than you
And no one other than you

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall

[Cheb Mami (Algerian Arabic):]
Ya lili ah ya leel
[English:]
Oh night oh night

The Vulnerability of Love

To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket - safe, dark, motionless, airless - it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. ~ C.S. Lewis

With each passage of human growth we must shed a protective structure [like a hardy crustacean]. We are left exposed and vulnerable - but also yeasty and embryonic again, capable of stretching in ways we hadn't known before. ~ Gail Sheehy

To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt. ~ Susan Sontag

Love comes when manipulation stops; when you think more about the other person than about his or her reactions to you. When you dare to reveal yourself fully. When you dare to be vulnerable. ~ Dr. Joyce Brothers

When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability... To be alive is to be vulnerable. ~ Madeleine L'Engle

We all need somebody to talk to. It would be good if we talked... not just pitter-patter, but real talk. We shouldn't be so afraid, because most people really like this contact; that you show you are vulnerable makes them free to be vulnerable. ~ Liv Ullmann
